My First Time....

In the gentle cadence of a Nicholas Sparks novel, let me share a journey not just of mine, but one that echoes in the hearts of many. For far too long, whispers of judgment have followed those brave enough to seek solace in the care of a mental health professional. "He must be troubled," they'd say with a dismissive chuckle, as if the very act of reaching out for help was akin to a slip of decorum, an exposed vulnerability in the fabric of one's being.

At the tender age of sixty-eight, I've witnessed these moments more times than the stars that grace our night sky. Yet, it's in the quietude of our solitary struggles, beneath the facade of smiles and bravado, that the true battle rages—a silent tempest of loneliness, loss, and unspoken pain.

With a heart full of apprehension, I accepted an invitation from the Veterans Administration to embark on a path less traveled by many of my comrades. Here, I must pause to honor the angels masquerading as health care workers within those hallowed halls, their dedication shining bright amidst the shadow of bureaucratic entanglements.

The day of reckoning arrived, shrouded in uncertainty. Would I find solace on a plush couch, the clichéd scene set with a glass of water and a box of tissues within arm's reach? Would the figure of my confidante mirror the iconic visage of Freud himself?

Reality painted a different picture. A warm handshake from a vibrant, young doctor dissolved my fears, her presence a balm to my wary soul. We were not strangers, but two souls reuniting after a long journey apart. The office, devoid of grandeur, became a sanctuary where words flowed freely, unburdened by the weight of judgment.

As the hour wove its magic, I found myself rising from the chair lighter, unshackled from the chains of my apprehensions. A promise of a return visit lingered in the air, a beacon of hope that there existed remedies for the storms that raged within.

This revelation is not mine alone to hold but a beacon for all who wander in the shadow of societal expectations. The time has come to lay down the armor we wear against the world, to acknowledge that within us lies a need for an emotional compass to navigate the tumultuous seas of our inner turmoil.

Let this testament be a lighthouse for those adrift, guiding you to a haven where gentle breezes of understanding and compassion await. In the embrace of acceptance, we find the courage to reveal our true selves, stepping into the light of our natural state of being, unburdened and free.
